A model diorama depicting legendary Lancaster EE139 at dispersal between missions, arrived at the RAF Grimsby Museum at Waltham Windmill over the weekend after a 400 mile journey from Scotland. Constructed by Michael Walton and local Air Cadets in Arbroath, the diorama depicts “The Phantom of the Ruhr”; a Lancaster originally based at RAF Grimsby in 1943 and one of only 35 Lancaster Bomber’s known to have survived more than 100 missions. The Phantom serving with 100 Squadron, flew 60 operations from Waltham before being transferred to 550 Squadron at nearby RAF Killingholme with whom it flew a further 61 operations before the end of the war. The aircraft was scrapped in February 1946 having flown 121 Operations over occupied Europe.
The Diorama is shown being delivered to its new home by Mr Walton’s daughter Christian Walton (second from left) with volunteers Janet Hall and Roger Stephenson.
